About the Artist

basil_avatar

Mashing Ink, watercolour, pen and screenprint into densely textured visual planes, the paintings of L. Basil McMahon tease out fleeting notions of composure amidst a world set on fire. Finesse with the silkscreen and a knack for splatters inject Basil’s work with an eye-arresting, graphic touch evocative of an imminent ancient future gone somehow fantastically awry.

As a community organizer, Basil rocks steady with a grip of artist collectives, including the Inkspoon Print Syndicate, the Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret, the Ancient Rugged Revival and the Ecdysis Visual Arts Collective.

With a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies from UBC, and professional training in the field of community organizing, Basil’s work has been exhibited in galleries and popped up at festivals locally and internationally including The Fall and the Lumspace Gallery (Vancouver, Canada), Million Fishes Gallery (San Fransisco, US) Symbiosis Gathering (California, US) and the FLU/ORG Protocolo Nucle.ART festival (Santiago, Chile). Paintings and digital media have been published in Articulate, Breathe In/ Breathe Out, and One Cool Word Magazines (Vancouver, BC). He has done design, campaign, and outreach work for community groups all up and down the Pacific Coast, and printed for the 2006 OQOQO Local Artist’s Series (Canada). Presently, he’s living and organizing something, somewhere along the west coast of North America.
